Discover J Marie’S Gumbo House

Nestled on the north side of St. Louis at 8776 N Broadway, J Marie’S Gumbo House has become a neighborhood favorite for anyone craving authentic Southern flavors. The moment you step inside, the warm atmosphere and the aroma of simmering spices immediately hint at what’s to come. Many locals describe it as a hidden gem, the kind of place you’d rather keep to yourself but can’t resist telling friends about.

The heart of the experience lies in its menu, where gumbo naturally takes center stage. Thick, hearty, and packed with seafood and sausage, each bowl feels like a meal in itself. It’s served with just the right amount of heat, balanced by a depth of flavor that shows hours of careful preparation. Beyond gumbo, diners praise the fried catfish—crispy outside, tender inside—and the shrimp po’boy that comes stuffed generously in a soft roll. Portions are known to be more than satisfying, which makes sharing an option, though few want to part with a single bite.

What adds to the charm is the consistency in reviews. Many highlight not only the quality of the food but also the welcoming staff who remember faces and make newcomers feel like regulars. That personal touch is often mentioned alongside the speed of service, a detail that matters when you’re popping in for lunch or bringing the family for dinner. While some point out the casual, no-frills setting, most agree the flavors more than make up for it, and in fact, the relaxed vibe matches the soulful cooking perfectly.

In a city known for barbecue and toasted ravioli, having a spot that serves gumbo with such authenticity is refreshing. Restaurants like this don’t just serve meals; they preserve a tradition. Whether you’re exploring new dining locations or returning for your usual order, this diner delivers both comfort and flavor, making it an essential stop in St. Louis for anyone who appreciates real Southern cooking.

  • I was curious and made my way to J Marie's Gumbo Shop. Let me tell you, they did NOT disappoint. This food was Good! I ordered through Door Dash pick up. My food was ready sooner than they estimated. It was hot and ready in 30 minutes. I'm talking hot and fresh. Everything we ordered was delicious. We ordered the Giant Turkey Wing that comes with two sides. The chosen sides were greens and yams. Yumm is all I can say about that. The wing was large enough to share. We also got Gumbo, macaroni and cheese, extra greens, cornbread, peach cobbler, and banana pudding. I can honestly say there were no complaints. I love how well seasoned and fresh it all was. I strongly suggest you try this restaurant. It looks like a cute little house. You just walk on in and get blessed with this good food. I'm definitely going to eat there again soon! Ps... That gumbo is some of the best I've had. I love how spicy it is, and it's got that NOLA taste! This food was well worth my drive and my money!!!

  • Food is so good. Greens are so delicious, well seasoned and spicy. Everything is pretty seasoned. The corn bread is cake like which is the bomb. Service is amazing, our order has never been wrong even with it being a somewhat large order. Pricing is very reasonable and nice portions. Pictured: Monster Turkey Wing w/ 2 side and the cornbread comes with it.

  • The place was clean, like that they offered space to wait for your food. No dine in option. I mainly went for the gumbo. It was a wait 30 because it wasn't done, but I didn't mind. My husband tried the blackened catfish with shrimp, dirty rice, and candied yams. The catfish and shrimp were ok, the yams were great, and the cornbread was like cake. Overall, I would give that dish a 7/10. The gumbo was spicy and could have had a bit more flavor. Maybe they rushed it a little for me. The shrimp were big, and the sausage was great. Had a little crayfish in there as well, but I do prefer my gumbo a little thicker. This was more like soup. I would give a 6/10. Overall you should try and for your own opinion. Service was great

  • SUPPORT BLACK OWNED RESTAURANTS !!! DELISH ! DELISH ! DELISH ! Baby I just tore my plate up. Worth the wait (which didn’t take long) & money. The blackened catfish was too spicy for me but it was bomb so I had a water bottle to balance it out lol. The shrimp and rice were perfect. Cornbread and yamz fire. Peach cobbler amazing. Will be back for more and I am bringing the fam.
